Park It
Parking practice from above: 13 levels with the maneuvers from a real road test. Don't touch the other cars.
The maneuvers on a road test
Most behind-the-wheel tests include some mix of parking and slow-speed control: pulling into a spot, backing into one, parallel parking between two cars, parking on a hill, a three-point turn on a narrow street, and backing up in a straight line. They are the parts new drivers practice least, because they are hard to rehearse without a car and an empty lot. Park It lets you practice the geometry — when to start turning, how far to swing out, when to straighten — before you try it for real.
The car turns about its rear wheels like a real one, with the same turning radius as an ordinary sedan, and the steering wheel stays where you leave it. Every touch of a parked car, cone or curb counts. Three stars means no touches and no more back-and-forth moves than a good driver would need. On parallel parking levels the third star also needs you within 18 inches of the curb.
Parking on a hill, and where not to park
The hill levels end with one more step: turn the front wheels the right way and set the parking brake. Uphill against a curb the wheels point away from it, so the car would roll back into the curb; downhill they point toward it; with no curb they point toward the edge of the road. The last level has two gaps along the curb and only one is legal — the other is right next to a fire hydrant.
These rules are on our rules of the road page, with the state-by-state caveats. For driving rules in 3D, try the Road Test in Road Sign Adventure, and for the rules without the steering, Signal Lab.
Questions people ask
How close to the curb do I need to park?
Many states, California among them, say within 18 inches of the curb; some use 12 inches. The game gives the third star for 18 inches or closer. Check your state's handbook for its number.
Which way do I turn the wheels on a hill?
Uphill with a curb: away from the curb. Downhill with a curb: toward the curb. No curb, uphill or downhill: toward the edge of the road. Then set the parking brake.
How do I steer?
Drag the steering slider, or hold the left and right arrows (A and D). The wheel stays where you leave it, like a real car. Up arrow is gas, down arrow or Space is the brake, R switches between Drive and Reverse, C centers the wheel.
What counts as a move?
Each change of direction after the car has moved — forward to reverse, or reverse to forward. Parallel parking usually takes two. Each level shows its par for three stars.
Does it need 3D graphics?
No. Park It is drawn in 2D, so it works on school Chromebooks and in browsers with hardware acceleration turned off.
